This is in no way meant to be offensive, and I hope no one takes it as such.

A discussion in another community, brits_americans, was started by someone asking if anyone had heard the phrase "Is he gay or is he English?" The thread turned to a discussion about the stereotypical gay "lisp" and some people said they thought it was only a North American phenomenon, while others said it existed in the UK and also among gay Spanish people.

My question is, how did this stereotypical lisp evolve? Is it common in languages other than English, besides Spanish? Can anyone point me to research or information about it?

Again, I am not trying to insult anyone or be offensive. I'm just wondering about the how, why and when of the evolution of this speech pattern.
