Assistance sought with French translation

I'm currently translating a historical roleplaying game set in the 5th century, and I'm having a bit of trouble with a section quoted from another book, in the 'Religions and Deities' chapter. It's from Marguerite Yourcenar's Mémoires d'Hadrien, and the quoted section is as follows:

« Le culte de Mithra me conquit un moment par les exigences de son ascétisme ardu, qui retendait durement l’arc de la volonté, par l’obsession de la mort, du fer et du sang, qui élevait au rang d’explication du monde l’âpreté banale de nos vies de soldats (…) Ces rites barbares, qui créent entre les affi liés des liens à la vie à la mort, frappaient les songes les plus intimes d’un jeune homme impatient du présent, incertain de l’avenir et par là même ouvert aux dieux. »

The first part I've bolded is clearly still on the theme of discipline and restrictions on free will, but I'm struggling to figure out how to translate 'arc de la volonté' and thus also how to translate the associated verb.

In the second bolded part, the nouns are easy, of course, but I have little knowledge of Mithraism and Google searches have not helped me decide whether these bonds between those affiliated to the religion are in life and in death or in life until death.

Any thoughts would be very welcome...
