The usage of articles in sociological research
Describing the findings of a research, what the rules are (if any) about the usage of articles? One of my phrases (translated by me from Russian, the text is not mine): "We found that the higher (the) parents expectations, the better (the) students' academic performance". I googled a little and found different patterns:
1) "The higher the parents' socioeconomic status, ... the lower the likelihood of the youth being classified within the separation profile."
2) "the higher parents rated the effectiveness of full inclusion, the more likely they were to report positive views."
Also: "70% of respondents said" or "70% of THE respondents said"?
Oh, I know, that a lot depends on the context, and yet, the more surveys I read, the less clear the picture seems to be...
