A question for native speakers of English

Hey friends,

My question is so basic that I'm even ashamed to ask it, but I do have to clarify a point for myself.

This is a quotation from a book:

"They may adopt phrases like "I want" + object. "I want water" works; "I want book" sounds less good, but it works to get started".

The question is about this "less good". Shouldn't it be "worse" in this case? I remember our school teachers kept telling us that we can't say "less good", it should be "worse".

"Less good" in this context sounds right to me, however. I can't explain why. Maybe because "less good" in this context means something like "not so good"?
