Tueur à gage (Hitman)

Hi all!

I have come across this French expression recently which dictionaries translate as "a hitman", but I can't understand what "à gage" here means.

Is it a killer "fore sure" or a "hired" killer. Hovewer if it is "hired" wouldn't it be more logical to use the word "engagé".

Can anyone explain me this, please?

Thanks in advance.
