"Pulchritudinous"
I've just purchased the English-language edition of the great Bass-Baritone Hans Hotter's memoirs, which are delightful, but without a copy of the German original on hand I'm finding myself perplexed by some of the translations. The one most perplexing is "pulchritudinous," a word I can't imagine anyone using except as a translation for yet another wonderful, untranslatable German neologism. I'm absolutely dying to know what the original German must have been. Does anyone know of a particular German colloquialism for someone of great physical beauty? If it helps at all, Hotter was Bavarian, but also picked up some Silesian dialect in his travels that apparently horrified his Grandmother, who declared that he'd become a Prussian. ;-)
