Russian parentheses question....

So, with the recent LJ mess-up I've had a chance to see a LOT of presumably emotional Russian comments. Occasional use of Google translate tells me that most of them are annoyed at the loss of preview and subject fields as well.

Interesting thing, though, a lot of them seem to end in a random open or close parenthesis. Google translate just leaves that as a random parenthesis.

Why is this? Is it actually some other character that looks like a parenthesis to me because I can't read Cyrillic? Is it short for angry or smiley or sad faces? Do Russians, as a rule, just type really badly?

Edit: Thank you guys! It IS just smileys, which was my second thought (after "HUH? That's a weird typo to see more than once!") but I like to know things instead of just thinking them :)
