German query - a 'Matin'

I'm trying to identify an item of men's clothing mentioned in a German narrative from the Napoleonic period, a 'Matin'; it seems to be a sort of overcoat or cloak, in some cases at least with a row of buttons behind at the top, Can anyone tell what exactly this would look like, and what the English name for such a garment might be?
