Immigrants and language learning

Several theoretical questions follow.

If you came from country X to country Y, would you learn Y language? Or would you move into an area populated by X-speakers and not learn Y language but continue to speak only X? Would you want your children/grandchildren to learn the Y language? Would you think they should learn X language? Or maybe both?

Would you consider your children/grandchildren to be Y-ish of X-descent, or maybe pure Y-ish or X-ish?

Please provide at least a modicum of explanation - it doesn't have to be long, but at least a few words...

Inspired by the Polish-Lithuanian debates over Poles in Lithuania learning Polish; the Chinatown residents in USA; Polish district in Chicago, USA...

The question is meant to be general and is phrased so that it doesn't offend anyone...

My take - in comments.
