azeribaijani and russian

Salam all,

I'm going to be in Azerbaijan for the next two years, and I've been using a few different resources to teach myself a little bit of Azerbaijani, but I'm really interested in finding more resources so that I can learn as much as possible before I arrive. Any suggestions / recommendations?

Also, I know that Azeri used to be written in Cyrillic, and that in some places people speak Russian instead of Azeri, so I was thinking it might be a good idea to (try to) learn some Russian too. I've learned a few non-latin alphabets before, but I've never been completely successful at it from just self study, so I was wondering if anyone had any tips. Specifically, with cyrillic, I know that the written forms of letters can be very different then the typed form. Does anyone know anywhere online or perhaps a book that teaches this? Also if anyone has any recommendations for good books or websites to learn Russian, that would be really appreciated as well!

Finally, if anyone has any anecdotes or stories or anything they want to share from/about Azerbaijan, I would love to hear them :)

Çox sağ olun!

(ps there is no azerbaijani tag so i just used other relevant ones, hope thats okay)
