Another one question. About past simple.

So, hi (-: I want to say, what i'm still not so good in English - like boy in swimming pool, who had knew how to swim about two hours ago and now trying to do ridiculous, unconfident movies with his hands, legs and other body-stuff.
Also, i want so ask - how to use past simple tense. For example, how it will be right: "What did it was?" or "What did it be?". I think, what second one variant is right, because right form of construction on Past Simple: "Did + v1 form".
Maybe you can advice to me, english-speaking people? =) Thanks.
