How good is Google translate for Chinese?

If I translate something to Chinese and back, it appears to be mostly understandable. But I don't know if that means the Chinese output is mostly understandable, or if it just manages to preserve the English meanings through the translation.

So, (Mandarin) Chinese speakers... if someone were to send you a short email using Google Translate, do you think you would probably be able to understand most of it?
