A Polish-English contrastive grammar question

(I don't think you need to know Polish to help me.)

I have such NP constructions with classifying modifiers:

historia starożytna -- vs. -- ancient history
(N + post-MOD)        (pre-mod + N)

And I keep wondering if there is a structural contrast? Or a functional contrast...? Could anyone help me?
