Runes

(Oh, this community makes me so curious about languages, I want to understand all of them after reading just a few posts here. It's so inspiring!)

I've just a quick, very superficial question about Runes: They've been used as 1. alphabet but they're also 2. ideograms and have been used for magical practice, right? Is there a good website/book about the second point(s)? When I google it there are only websites about using Runes yourself in a magical way (Wicca cult and so on), but I want to know something about the original meaning of them, mainly the runes from the older Futhark, but the other ones are also fine.

Also, is there a good (scientific) book/website about runes, about their history, origin, development you'd recommend (English or German)?
