raising bilingual children

I always love reading posts on this subject here, and now I'd like some input on my own personal situation. I'm in my second trimester with my first kid and my in-laws are already starting to get a little feisty on the subject of language!

I'm American and a native English speaker. My husband is German and a native German speaker. We both speak the other language second best (him better than me) and bits of other languages. We live in Germany.

I'll be the primary caregiver, and I'll be speaking English to the kid. What I'm wondering is, what should my husband speak?

I'd particularly like opinions and referrals to articles and books on the following subjects: Can I, with the help of radio/TV/books, get enough English into my kid? If my husband speaks German at home, will that thwart the learning of English? What impact does the language my husband speaks with me in front of the kid have on the kid?

I want the kid to learn English, but I don't want to sacrifice his or her German skills. I know a girl, about 7, with a British dad and German mom who can understand English but *refuses* to speak it. I also don't want that for mine!

Thanks!
