Mis instead of Ms/Mrs/Miss

At work today my colleagues and I came across a form completed by a PhD student. The student specialises in philology & onomastics. She gave her title as 'Mis' and we were unsure whether this was an error or if she was making a (linguistic?) point. What do you think? I'm inclined to think she intended the title to be spelt that way and I'm intrigued to know why. Would be interested to know what you think.
