"pistolone" bread?

I'm currently craving this amazing bread from an Italian bakery in St. Louis. That's a 2-hour drive, so I'll have to distract myself with linguistics in the meantime:

The bakery calls it "pistolone." It's a large, oval-shaped, very crusty white bread that may or may not be topped with a sprinkling of sesame seeds (your choice. with seeds is better). The name has never made sense to me, though. Pistola + -one = "big gun", but IIRC an augmentative/diminutive suffix can make it an entirely different word, and not simply indicate a smaller/larger version of the stem word. Any clue how this name could be descriptive of the bread?
