motivation to keep going!

i couldn't help but feel a little dejected today, when i was browsing a bookstore in Taiwan with a good friend (who is a native Taiwanese.) and i feel as though...despite studying Chinese characters for about two months now (seriously, anyway) i guess the time isn't enough - i'm not able to study at all, as much as i'd like every day...
so, my friend said that being a foreigner, the only way to really achieve this kind of desired literacy in the Chinese language...is to pursue serious studies upon returning to the US, for example, applying for a program in Asian studies or something along those lines, with a concentration in Chinese language.

Do you feel this would be a beneficial way to attain that fluency and literacy? It just feels like...without the structure of a program specifically geared towards acquisition of the language like in this manner, I would not be able to learn it sufficiently and keep up with it, upon leaving Taiwan and returning to the US (which would be around the end of June.)

Any feedback would be so appreciated!! thanks guys =)
