A specific question about Italian

Dear fellow Linguaphiles,
is there anyone among you who knows enough Italian philology to check whether anyone has ever done a study about the distribution of words for city and town quarters (rione, quartiere, sestiere, etc.)? I am especially interested in the use, distribution and antiquity of rione. Thank you.
