What sort of name is Chaon?

Not strictly in the Linguaphiles community's remit, but who better to ask? I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what sort of name novelist Dan Chaon has. Interviews online inform us that it's pronounced "Shawn," but in the meat-grinder of Ellis Island, anything can happen to the pronunciation of a surname. Five minutes of Google-based research reveals only that "Chaon" is a figure from Greek mythology, but I'm inclined to doubt that has any connection to the author's name. So what culture/language is it from? Thank you for any light you can shed on this.
