Spanish: Preterite of "haber"

Something was bugging me just now, and I wanted to bounce this off the other Spanish-speakers in the community:

Aside from using "hubo" as the preterite form of "hay" to indicate an event that happened in the past("hubo un accidente," and so on), is the preterite of "haber" used in any other situation?

I was daydreaming, and I started thinking about all the various conjugations of "haber" in the preterite (hube, hubiste, etc.) and realized that I have never used nor ever heard used any of them in my nearly ten years' experience with the language. Are they used for anything, or are they basically obsolete now in modern Spanish?
