Pronunciation Imitation

For some reason, whenever I'm starting a language (and sometimes even after I've long started it), I can't imitate pronunciation correctly unless I have the IPA transcription. Does this happen to anyone else? For instance, in studying Mandarin, pinyin only did so much for me. Only after I took a look at the IPA of the phonemes did my pronunciation get better, especially with the tricky initial r.
