italian language reading

Does anyone here have book recommendations for learning to read academic-level Italian? I am not interested in phrasebooks or learning how to order a meal without mushrooms; I need a quick introduction to the fundamentals of the language (much like April Wilson's German Quickly for German).

Thanks!
