Anyone else have difficulty using a non-native language on the phone?

Is it common to have far more difficulty using a language on the phone than in face-to-face discussion? I'm assuming it has something to do with face-to-face conversation having facial expressions and gestures which can be used to help figure out what is going on, but almost every time someone calls me and speaks to me in Chinese, I end up having to text them back and ask them to repeat it in writing, because I almost never can tell what they are saying. I don't usually have this problem at all when I'm talking to people in real life. I mean, I sometimes have to ask them to slow the heck down and possibly use fewer words, but it's not usually a total loss.

Does this happen to anyone else? I like to think that my Chinese is getting to the point where I can call it pretty good, but then I get a phone call, and all my language confidence comes screeching to a halt.
