malay v. indonesian?

Interestingly enough, here in Taiwan I've met several people from Malaysia and so when I ask them if they speak English, they say mainly it's Malay they speak. I asked them if it was similar or same as Indonesian and, well, they were very adamant about making sure I understood full well they spoke Malay! and NOT Indonesian!

But I had thought these two languages were mutually intelligible. Are they more like varying dialects, or are they truly as different as night and day? I've never heard either spoken in much detail, so if anyone has any good links to listening to smething in this language(s) I'd appreciate it =)
