honorifics and politeness

Ok I'm currently looking for a research topic but I can't seem to think of one that seems good enough, if you know what I mean.

I'm thinking of looking at languages with honorifics such as Japanese and Korean (information on their language structure is more accessible) and comparing them to English. I want to find out if honorific languages are inherently (i use this term loosely) more polite than English. Can the same amount of deference be expressed in both languages etc.?

I don't exactly have much knowledge about Japanese or Korean (I can only speak enough as a tourist) so i would like some input from you guys who know Japanese/Korean and English.

Thanks!
