Please- a little Latin help!

 Hey,

I'm a recent new member (of Livejournal and Linguaphiles) and I have to say, it's so neat that people can share a love of languages in an online community... to hear my friend talk, I thought Livejournal was only for fanfiction (sorry!!) but I can see it's far, FAR bigger than that.

So here's what I was wondering. About to get a new iPod, and I'd like to have it inscribed with "Know Thyself" (sort of my maxim) in Latin. I know there are online translators, but I don't trust those (especially not for Latin, LOL) and my Linguistics major cousin referred me to Livejournal.

Why in Latin, when I don't have the least clue about the language? Hard to say, even for me- I guess it's because it's the foundation of the Humanities, the language of so many great philosophers, and the original language of so many ancient literary classics. I am about to attend university as an English major and all the aspects I listed above appeal to me. (I'd consider studying Latin if I'd already mastered French, haha.)

Thanks for any and all advice here!
