Use of v in hanyu pinyin

I've just been phoneticising (is this an actual word, or a neologism I've coined?) a list of Mandarin names romanised in hanyu pinyin, and noticed two students apparently using "lv" and "nv" to represent "lü" and "nü". Has anyone else seen this? How common is it?
