The paragraph is about a group of friends who started an improvised car race on their way to a restaurant.
[Three of them] "were a length or so ahead of us as we approached the finish line but they were all so busy leaning on each other’s door handles that they missed the turn into the arena"
What exactly were they doing? Does it mean going side by side really close to each other, like a gentler form of paint swapping?
