Malay inquiries

Hi there~

I am taking a break from the exhaustion of learning Japanese. I'm considering Malay because I want to visit Malaysia and Singapore, and it will also help me get around Indonesia. It's apparently quite easy to learn Malay. I've been talking to people that say that even if you live in Malaysia, nearly everyone speaks English so Malay really isn't "needed". I'd want to learn it just for the experience, not just out of necessity.

So, my questions:
1) Is it worth it to learn Malay to truly explore & interact in Malaysia?
2) Is there a demand overseas for Malay translators, or do they all speak English anyway?

I'm noticing how little material there is on the internet for learning Malay (compared to Indonesian, which is odd), and wondering if this is a big hint.

Thanks^^
