would or will

If you are asking someone whether he has time to meet you, would you ask "would you be free" or "will you be free" (taking into consideration that the person is your boss or your teacher)? Most of the people I've asked said they'll use the former since it's more polite but i think the latter seems more correct since it's asking a fact - if you are free or not.
