"economies of scale"; prospecting strategies

Here is a phrase about funding of environmental non-profits -- every word is familiar but in some instances the meaning is recondite...
"Without measurable results, organizational size differences translate into differential access to funding – driven more by economies of scale in the design of targeted marketing material and prospecting strategies than by actual results."

Can please someone explain in simple words what this means? "Economies of scale in the design..." And what does "prospecting strategies" mean in relation to non-profits? Thanks!
