hook / linchpin / ?

Has anyone heard or even used the expression "the hook of the speech"? Google found exactly one example. LEO suggests "linchpin" instead of "hook", which sounds better to me, but again I found only one example at Google.

Do you know what I'm talking about? Do I need to explain? Which expression would you use?

Oh, and Happy New Year!
