tolkien languages question

so, what language would gandalf have spoken in? i have a feeling it would just be regular ol' english, since he wasn't cool enough like the elves or dwarves to have his own species :), or horrible enough as sauron to need to black speech...but did wizards speak in any particular tongue? or was it sort of a generalized vernacular so the hobbits could understand him?
