Perfecting an Accent

What do you do to go from having a good accent to a really good accent in a second language? I'm pulling my hair out here. I'm in Germany as an exchange student and have been mistaken for a German by Germans on several occassions - my pronunciation has good days and bad days - but last weekend I met this fellow and was talking to him for barely two minutes when he stops me and goes "Are you American?". Really frustrating.

That's great if you think it's cute and unique to maintain a foreign accent in a second language, but I'm wondering about solid advice on how to move from decent pronunciation to consistently near-native pronunciation. Listen harder? Get books on tape at the library? Thoughts?
