Emoticons in the news

It's marginal to our subject but I just discovered this article and thought I'd share.
Love 'em or hate 'em... we now know who to credit for 'em: Someone found a Carnegie-Mellon backup tape from 1982 so there's a definite "first use" for the two most basic emoticons.

A quick check of Wikipedia and Wiktionary indicates that BRB (for "be right back") appears widely understood and used in French-speaking online…
