extended writing in L2s

Out of curiosity, when writing essays or the like in one of your L2s, how many of you start by writing it in (one of) your L1(s) and translate it into the L2, and how many of you work primarily directly in the L2? And how has this changed over the course of your learning the language? I've found that in the early stages of learning Japanese I worked primarily directly in Japanese, but as I moved on to longer essays on more complex topics and with more grammatical requirements, I tend to write more and more of my first draft in English, I think partly because I have more faith in my ability to write more than just an extended grammatical exercise that way.
