A couple summers ago, I took a course in historical linguistics in which we briefly discussed verb forms like a-comin, a-goin, a-runnin, etc.  I seem to remember learning that these are actually carryover from an archaic form, I think comparable to German ge- forms?  Can anyone point me to an article or something that discusses this?  I tried using Google/Google Scholar, but I had difficulty formulating my searches to get the results I wanted.

Thanks!
