French books

I am an (American) English speaker trying to improve my French. I took 3 years of it in high school and 1 semester in college, but I haven't used it much in the past few years. I recently acquired two penpals in hopes of improving my reading comprehension and writing. I am also in the process of looking for French music (that somewhat matches my tastes, hopefully) to help improve my listening comprehension.

I want to move on to books (and maybe movies), and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I like Harry Potter, but I've heard the French translation of the books aren't great. To give you an idea of my tastes, I enjoy Neil Gaiman, Tolkien, and Frank Peretti, but I also like mystery books. I think young-adults' or teens' fiction would probably be best.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I would prefer that suggestions be of books originally written in French and not translations from other languages.

Oh, will French DVD's play in US DVD players or are they the wrong format? Just trying to figure out how I can watch movies in French other than watching English movies with a French language track (as they are most often dubbed in Canadian French... or does it make that much of a difference?)

Sorry this was so long. Shutting up now.
