I'm reading Ryszard Kapuściński's Imperium, and in the section on his travels in Central Asia, he mentions in a kind of offhand way that Turkic language speakers from Turkey all the way to wherever in Siberia can understand each other. This caught my interest, and I've subsequently found several sources that say that the Turkic languages are all(!) basically mutually comprehensible.

Anyone have much experience with Turkic languages? Is this actually true?
