Beginner's English

I am looking for recommendations for books on things like sentence structures and (how can I put this?) parts of words. I can tell a verb from a noun, and know an adjective or prefix when I see one, but if you start talking about predicates and gerunds and prepositions it will all go right over my head.
I never completed school and as such I'm mostly self-taught. Whilst I have a good vocabulary and am well-read on things like where the English language came from and how words evolve, the basic elements of grammar and syntax have slipped by me. This is a huge oversight, so I'd love some recommendations for books and textbooks that will be enlightening without being condescending. An engaging author is also a big plus.
