Grammar-oriented learning

I'm one of those language learners who prefers to learn the underlying grammar instead of just jumping in and learning phrases. I just enjoy and do better with learning the grammar and then building on it instead of learning phrases and deconstructing what's happening. For this reason, I have gotten kind of hosed on some 'Teach Yourself' type books because they're all about giving phrases and when to use them.

Is there a brand of 'teach yourself' type books that has a lot of grammar, or is my best bet just getting textbooks? I'm not really looking for a particular language, but all in general. Thank you.
