TEFL/TESOL certification courses

Perhaps slightly off-topic but has anyone had any luck getting a job after taking a TEFL or TESOL certification course (right now I'm looking at mostly)? The statistics given for the percentage of students who obtain a related job immediately after completing a five-week certification course seem really high.

And I know I could probably get certified for less money in my homeland USA, but I like learning abroad and would like to teach in Eastern Europe.
