I'm translating a children's book into English and stumbled across an interesting question - contractions (don't, won't, aren't) - yes or no?
I started out by writing the full versions because the characters were somewhat pompous (also the original is written in such pretentious, hyfoluted language that you simply had to) but then I had an aggressive character who simply *needs* to say "can't you see / don't you know" etc. So I started wondering if maybe I can use the contractions throughout the text?
Are there any norms regarding this?
(Just don't tell m e to ask the client... it... err... won't be a good idea).
By the way, could someone please help me with the proper spelling of hyfoluted? I just KNOW it's wrong and can't find the correct one. Grr. TY
