translation problemz

I've been looking around for a French novel for awhile, and I finally found two at my local Goodwill (buck each!). As you might have guessed, this sentence is puzzeling (at least to me).

"...et, parfois, le casque brillant d'un dragon au pied pesant qui suivait avec peine la marche plus légère des lignards. "

"and sometimes, the shiny helmets of a dragon on heavy foot followed with sorrow the much lighter march of the line enfantry." is what I get when I try translating with a dictionary and the intraweb.

I must be missing something, unless it's metaphoric.

EDIT:
Partageurs = ???
