Universities in Spain

I'm looking into going to university in Spain, and was researching schools in the Catalonia and Barcelona area, as I've heard some great things about the region. Would this be completely counterproductive to me mastering Spanish, as in would I be surrounded by 100% Catalan? I would be interested in learning Catalan, but not really at the expense of Spanish ...

Any thoughts on universities in Spain in general? Suggestions for an American?
