Italian vs. Spanish

Hi everyone, I'm really sorry if this has been posted but I really need some educated advice and this community is filled with incredibly intelligent people. So I'd thought I'd give it a go.

I am currently in a Masters Program for French and I am looking to Pursue a PhD in French Lit, specifically 20th century, but I really haven't decided EXACTLY what area of French I would like to study in terms of a PhD. I am still very interested in some French Cultural Studies PhD Programs.

Anyways, for pretty much all of the programs I am looking at, they've said that I should have a reading knowledge of a second Romance Language. Im having a very difficult time deciding between Italian and Spanish. I would really love to learn both of them eventually, but I don't know which one I want to learn for the next year or two before I start a PhD program. Any advice would be very helpful. Thank you!

EDIT: Thank you everyone!! I chose Italian! :)
