The word "diable" sounds way too strong and evil for me. Are there alternatives?

In English, it's called Jack-In-The-Box. According to Wikipedia, the word "jack" once referred to the slaves who had tried to run away. They were kept in boxes which little children would often poke through with sticks. The man inside, in total pain, would often burst out, breaking the cover of the box. According to Wikipedia, the first Jack-In-The-Boxes were originally black men.
It is a very sad, very loaded story. =(
