R's and l's in South America

Having read about Caipira and knowing that r -> l, and l -> r is common in many dialects of Spanish (specifically, Caribbean and rural Panamanian), I started to wonder in general about the statusses of r's and l's in South American Spanish and Portuguese. In dialects you're familiar with, how are they used, and if they impede upon each others' territory ever, which direction do they go? I'm reading a paper (Broce and Cacoullos's "Dialectología Urbana" rural: la estratificación social de (r) y (l) en Coclé, Panamá, 2002) about sociolinguistic conditioning of different realizations of r's and l's. Apparently, in the non-standard variants, people prefer to turn l's into r's. However, there're some cases in which either can become a 'y' [j] or a 'w', or even an 'rl'!

Edit: Extra credit for the IPA savvy, how are the /r/ and /l/ actually realized?
