'Vorwelt' & 'Mitwelt'

Hi there! - I'm currently attempting to acquire some comprehension of one of Goethe's Roman Elegies (fifth). I just have a problem with these two words : 'Vorwelt' & 'Mitwelt'. 
In context ;

Froh empfind' ich mich nun auf klassischem Bodem begeistert,
Lauter und reizender spricht Vorwelt und Mitwelt zu mir.

I was wondering if these were compound nouns; as well, 'welt' ( =world) is a part of these words. Therefore I thought Vorwelt might be referring to the past, and Mitwelt to the present. This is a complete amateur guess thoughh. If anyone could help me, it would be much appreciated :).
